After world-wide protests by activists, they finally received the recognition they deserved when their graves, known as the African Burial Ground, were declared an official national monument in 2006. Designated as "one acre for the free people of color, and one for the slaves in the City," Shockoe Hill African Burying Ground was opened in 1816 . At 8:00am, a group of around 30 activists gathered outside of Brooklyn's Borough Hall to protest the planned building of affordable housing units at the site of a former burial ground for enslaved Africans.
